چکیده

Spatial and temporal variability in distribution and growth of newly settled red drum Sciaenops ocellatus were examined in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, USA. Overall, 1891 red drum larvae and early juveniles (4 to 30 mm standard length. SL) were identified from weekly epibenthic sled collections taken during the annual recruitment period (September-December 1994). Densities ranged from 0.0 to 3.4 ind. m-2, with peak values observed in mid to late October. Density varied significantly between habitats (Halodule wrjghtii vs Thalassia testudinum) and among sites. Otolith-based techniques were used to determine hatch-date distributions and individual growth rates of newly settled red drum. Hatch dates of individually aged red drum (n = 324) ranged from September 4 to October 30 (57 d ) . Hatch dates \yere used to separate individuals into 10-d cohorts and cohort-specific growth rates were estimated from exponential size-dt-age plots. Cohort-specif~c Instantaneous growth coeffic~ents (g) ranged from 0.041 to 0.058 d-' with highest values occurring for m~d-season cohorts. Spatial and temporal patterns of recent growth (mean increment width over 5 d) were also investigated. Recent growth rates were highest for mid-season cohorts and relatively uniform between habitats and among sites. Since spatial trends in density were not explained by growth differences, we hypothesize that factors other than growth potential were influencing the distribution of newly settled red drum in the Aransas Estuary.

Habitat-related predation on juvenile wild-caught and hatchery-reared red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus).

We examined the patterns of habitat-specific mortality for newly settled red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) using an experimental mesocosm approach. Experiments were designed to analyze prey vulnerability and fish rearing-type (wild-caught or hatchery-reared) in estuarine habitats of varying structural complexity including marsh (Spartina alterniflora Loisel), oyster reef (Crassostrea virginica Gme...

Growth of newly settled red drum Sciaenops ocellatus in different estuarine habitat types

We examined growth of recently settled juvenile red drum in salt marsh, seagrass, oyster reef, and on nonvegetated bottom areas in the Galveston Bay system of Texas (USA). We estimated growth using otolith microstructure from free-ranging fish collected in different habitat types and also measured growth of red drum in experimental enclosures where fish movement was restricted. Otolith growth w...

Vulnerability of newly settled red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) to predatory ®sh: is early-life survival enhanced by seagrass meadows?

We conducted predation experiments to evaluate the vulnerability of red drum Sciaenops ocellatus (Linnaeus) larvae and early juveniles to pin®sh Lagodon rhomboides (Linnaeus) predators. Experiments were designed to analyze the e€ects of habitat complexity, prey size, and rearing condition on prey vulnerability. Condition of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus ) from estuarine nursery habitats

RNA:DNA ratios of larval and juvenile red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) collected from nursery habitats in the Aransas Estuary, Texas, in 1994 were quantified using a highly sensitive ethidium-bromide fluorometric technique. RNA:DNA ratios of wild red drum were evaluated by comparing individual values to a linear regression model derived for starved laboratoryreared red drum. Wild red drum were in...

Spatial and temporal variability in growth, mortality, and recruitment potential of postsettlement red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus, in a subtropical estuary*

Survival during the larval and juvenile stages of marine fishes is highly variable and plays a critical role in determining recruitment potential (Cushing, 1975; Houde, 1987). Early life survival is a function of both growth and mortality, and it is clear that these mechanisms act in concert to determine an individual’s probability of survival (Houde, 1996). Individuals experiencing rapid growt...
